The Berserker Ration: A Zero Chop Ramen Replacement For The Modern Warrior

The Lore

The Norse Berserkers were legendary warriors who fought with a trance-like fury, pushing their bodies far beyond normal human limits. But even a Berserker has to recover. When the battle is over and the body is battered, the hearth must provide fuel that heals rather than harms.

If you are managing chronic pain or a severe physical injury, there are days when just standing in the kitchen feels like a battlefield. When the pain flares, the instinct is to reach for the easiest, most heavily processed comfort food available—usually a block of sodium-loaded instant ramen.

But as a chef, I refuse to sacrifice healing for convenience. We can forge a better way. This is the Berserker Ration.

The Strategy (Zero Chop, Zero Strain)

This recipe is a protocol for survival. It is designed to be executed with zero chopping, zero heavy lifting, and absolutely no strain on an injured arm or shoulder.

Instead of active cooking, we rely on the ancient technique of steeping. We are building a hot, aggressively comforting, anti-inflammatory broth that does all the heavy lifting for us. By utilizing strategic, prepped ingredients, we eliminate the physical toll of the kitchen entirely.

The Arsenal (ingredients)

  • The Base: High-quality bone broth. Rich in collagen and amino acids, it acts as a deeply healing, anti-inflammatory foundation.
  • The Heat: Powdered ginger. A powerful natural anti-inflammatory that brings a warming, earthy fire to the bowl without requiring you to grate fresh root.
  • The Sustenance: Rice vermicelli noodles. They cook simply by sitting in boiling liquid—no tending a rolling pot required.
  • The Earth: Pre-shredded cabbage and frozen spinach. Maximum nutrients and fiber with zero knife work.
  • The Protein: Pre-cooked rotisserie chicken or smoked mackerel. The mackerel, in particular, pays homage to the Nordic coastal diet and delivers a massive hit of inflammation-fighting Omega-3s.
  • The Finish: (If Able) Chopped green onions, Two stocks, Cut up small with a pair of culinary scissors and a small handful of chia seeds to garnish, for that pop of color and an extra anti-inflammatory edge.

Equipment

  • 1 Small pot large enough to fit 1 full liter of liquid
  • 1 large soup bowl Large enough to fit 650ml of liquid plus your ingredients
  • 1 small whisk to give your broth a quick stir (you can use a spoon too)
  • 1 pair of culinary scissors (optional) to cut your green onions

Ingredients

  • 4 oz pre shredded slaw mix a generous handful
  • 2 oz frozen kale or spinach a small handful
  • 1 filet smoked mackerel (cut with the scissors if you like) this can be replaced with 4oz of pre cooked shredded rotisserie chicken
  • 1 bunch small rice vermicelli noodles
  • 1 tsp toasted sesame oil
  • 2 stocks scallion (green onion) to finish (optional)
  • 2 Tbsp chia seeds to finish
  • 500 ml chicken or beef bone broth if using a powder format use 500ml water to mix into pot
  • 150 ml dark soy sauce adjust to taste depending on bone broth
  • 2 Tbsp ginger powder for that earthy heat
  • 1 Tbsp garlic powder
  • 1 Tbsp pre minced garlic for that extra punch and deep flavour
  • 1 tsp toasted sesame oil (optional) to drizzle at the end
  • 1 tsp lemon juice (do not boil) add to the broth as it finishes simmering
  • 1 Tbsp black pepper just enough to fortify that earthy heat and help absorb all the nutrients

Instructions

  • In The large Soup Bowl:
Your large handful of shredded cabbage
Your small handful of frozen spinach/kale (both if you like)
Your Shredded chicken or mackerel filet
Your bunch of small rice vermicelli
  • In The Pot:
Your packet of bone broth mix with 500 ml of water or 500 ml of pre mixed broth
    Your dark soy
    Your Garlic Powder
    Your Ginger Powder
    Your pre minced Garlic
Your first tsp of sesame oil
    Your black pepper
bring to a boil then reduce heat to a simmer for 7 min
I recommend doing this before you setup the bowl so you can get the bowl ready while it cooks to save some waiting time
once your 7 min is up, pour the hot broth over the bowl from step one and let it steep for another 7 minutes covered to ensure your noodles are tender and ready to eat.
always check before eating to be sure of the desired texture.
  • the garnish (optional):
This is where you find your inner Chef and add your chia seeds and chopped scallion (green onion) on top to give it that finished picture perfect look and add some texture with the fresh crunch of the scallions and the earthy seeds. then to bring it home we give it that final drizzle with your second tsp of Toasted sesame oil to get those glossy beads of oil to sit on top and sparkle.
  • Chefs tip! when cooking your broth watch out for those pesky dark brown bubbles boiling over and making a mess that none of us have the energy to clean. At the end your broth should have an abyssal black look to it when finished. To ensure it doesn't boil over or burn, turn that heat down just as it comes to a boil. good luck out there!
